Margit received a RelayPro device in 2024 after discovering she and multiple family members have Marfan Syndrome.

Margit was born and raised in a small village in the north of Austria, where she and her two siblings worked on their parent’s farm from a young age. Sadly, her father unexpectedly passed away aged 36 due to an aortic rupture, but at the time there was no awareness of the possibility of Marfan Syndrome running in their family, or even that her father had it.

My siblings and I now go for regular check-ups. Both my brother and my sister already have an aortic replacement. This operation is not pleasant, but if it is planned and prepared, there is hardly any risk.

When Margit grew up, she moved away to Vienna for a job working in an office, a choice she is now grateful to have made, since finally being diagnosed with Marfan Syndrome, which is a disorder of the body's connective tissues, a group of tissues that maintain the structure of the body and support internal organs and other tissues.

I was still working for a few years after the dissection, but I had to realize that the unavoidable stress was not so good for me, and I was granted a disability pension.

Throughout her life, Margit has undergone five operations to treat her aorta, the first in 2002 and last in 2024. It took until around 2012 for a professor in the department of heart surgery at the Vienna Hospital to suggest she may have Marfan Syndrome. Thanks to this suggestion, Margit and her two siblings were finally given a diagnosis of the connective tissue disease, and it was confirmed her own daughter does not carry the genetic condition.

Now medically retired, her life has changed but she still enjoys traveling, singing in her choir and growing vegetables in the garden. Margit also volunteers her time in aid of Marfan Initiative Österreich where she is currently the president of the organisation. Marfan Initiative Österreich allows people with Marfan Syndrome to come together, learn more about the disease and advocate for their community.
