Darren McDean is a volunteer at The Marfan Trust UK, who we were introduced to at an Information Day in Birmingham, organised by the charity.
Darren was diagnosed with Marfan Syndrome at the age of ten. He has since undergone multiple surgeries and made many changes to his life to adapt to living with Marfan.
“They’re doing more than working, they’re keeping us alive,” and “they need to understand that our community is very thankful to them.”

Watch Darren’s full interview to hear about his experience living with this inherited genetic disorder and hear him thank Terumo Aortic Associates for being part of his journey. Darren received a Gelweave graft as part of a surgery in 2021.
We are thankful Darren was willing to share his story with us. As a volunteer with the Marfan Trust, Darren is usually on the other side of content creation as he creates graphic work, publications and works on the website, but kindly agreed to be the subject of interview this time around. Darren was more than happy to share his story knowing he would be speaking directly to Terumo Aortic Associates and hopes to one day visit the site if his health and schedule allows him to make the journey.
We hope Darren’s story reminds you that there is always a patient on the other end of the work we do here at Terumo Aortic. As mentioned in his interview, Darren’s father sadly passed away of a probable aortic dissection while Darren was still a baby. We are proud to be a part of the solution for people like Darren living with Marfan Syndrome, providing an option that sadly didn’t exist some generations before.
